Does fasting speed up your metabolism? No, and that’s fine

Does intermittent fasting speed up your metabolism? No. It’s been measured, the answer is no, and I’m going to show you the paper. Then I’ll tell you why that doesn’t matter and what fasting actually does instead.

The paper whose title is a warning label

In 2019, Eric Ravussin’s group at Pennington put eleven adults through two eating schedules in a crossover: an early window from 8am to 2pm, and a control window from 8am to 8pm. Same food, same calories. They measured energy expenditure in a metabolic chamber, which is the gold standard, not a wrist strap.

The title of the paper is the whole result: Early Time-Restricted Feeding Reduces Appetite and Increases Fat Oxidation but Does Not Affect Energy Expenditure in Humans.

Your body burned the same total on both schedules. What changed on the early window was the fuel mix: a higher share of what got burned was fat, and people were less hungry. So when a landing page tells you fasting “boosts your metabolism” or “keeps your metabolism running all evening,” it’s describing something the best measurement we have says doesn’t happen. You won’t read that sentence anywhere on this site.

What actually changes: when your body burns fat

Here’s the honest version. A longer overnight fast doesn’t make the furnace hotter. It changes what’s in the furnace. Once the food from your last meal is used up, your body switches to its own reserves, and the earlier your last meal, the more of your night runs on reserves. That’s it. That’s the mechanism, and it’s enough.

The same lab tested the exact clock time this site uses. Eleven adults ate between 8am and 2pm for four days, then, after a washout, between 8am and 8pm. On the 2pm cutoff, 24-hour glucose fell by 4 ± 1 mg/dl and morning fasting insulin fell by 2.9 mU/l (Jamshed et al., Nutrients 2019). Four days and eleven people is a mechanism study, not a weight-loss trial, so don’t let anyone, including me, sell it as one.

Early beats late, and late does nothing

If the effect were about “fasting” in the abstract, an 8-hour window would work at any time of day. It doesn’t. Same window, different clock, different result.

The window most people actually try, noon to 8, is the one with the null result.

Ninety adults with obesity, randomised to eat 7am to 3pm or across 12+ hours, both with the same calorie cut, for 14 weeks: the early group lost an extra 2.3 kg (Jamshed et al., JAMA Intern Med 2022). A hundred and sixteen adults randomised to eat noon to 8pm or three structured meals, for 12 weeks: the difference was 0.26 kg, p = .63, which is nothing (Lowe et al., TREAT, JAMA Intern Med 2020). Pool 17 TRE trials and you get 1.37 kg over the control group, with the authors calling the effect “small and of uncertain clinical importance” (Liu et al., JAMA Netw Open 2024).

Earlier wins. Late doesn’t. And even early is a couple of kilos over a season, not a transformation.

The caveat the supplement crowd won’t print

A systematic review of 19 studies found that early eating’s advantages over late eating showed up only when people were free to eat as much as they wanted. Once total calories were held equal, the differences disappeared. In other words, a good chunk of the benefit is that you eat less when the window is shorter.

That’s the method working as designed. Eating less without counting anything is the entire pitch, and a 2pm cutoff does it for you by giving you nothing to decide at 9pm. But it does mean there’s no metabolic magic here that works regardless of what you eat, so I don’t claim one.

Why “no” is the good news

If fasting worked by speeding up your metabolism, you’d be relying on an effect you can’t see, can’t measure at home, and that wears off. Instead it works by two things you can watch on your own bathroom scale: you eat less, and more of what you burn overnight is fat. Both show up in the gap between your evening weight and your morning weight, and that gap, averaged over two weeks, is a number you can plan with. That’s the whole method.

Two more things to know before you try it. Hunger is real: fasting ghrelin actually went up in the two-meal trials, and part of my case for a 2pm cutoff over a late one is that 9pm hunger is easier to sleep through than to snack through. And this isn’t for everyone; if you’re under 18, pregnant, or have a history with disordered eating, talk to a doctor before you change when you eat.

So: does fasting boost your metabolism? No. Does it still work? For most people, a little, and mostly because they eat less. Would you rather have a mechanism you can see on a scale, or one you have to take on faith?
