# Calories aren't magic.

You weigh 212 tonight. You weigh 210 tomorrow morning. Nobody counted anything, and two pounds left your body while you slept. That gap is your delta, and once you actually know your number, the scale stops being a mystery box.

[Claim a founding place](https://app.thebodyarcade.com/#signup) · [Try the free calculator](https://thebodyarcade.com/calculator/)

The app is open to the first 100 people, free for life. After that it's $1 a month while the app is this simple.

## I lost 40 lbs in a year and never counted a calorie

That's my number, from my body, running my own method. Yours will be different, and that's actually the whole point. A calorie is the heat a lab gets when it burns your sandwich in a steel chamber. It's a fact about the sandwich. Your scale, read twice a day, is a fact about you.

40 lbs over 52 weeks works out to 0.77 lb a week, a little under the [1 to 2 lb a week the CDC calls "gradual and steady."](https://thebodyarcade.com/science/#rate) The app starts you slower, at half a pound a week, and never lets you set it past 2. [Here's how the year went.](https://thebodyarcade.com/about/)

## Two numbers. No counting calories.

### Your Morning weight

Step on the scale when you wake up, before breakfast or a glass of water. That's your floor, and it's the first number of your day.

### Your Night weight

Step on again right after your last meal of the day. That's your ceiling.

### Your delta

`Night − next Morning`. Log it for a week and the median is a number you can plan with. From then on you manage one thing: tonight's ceiling.

You've probably been told to weigh yourself once, in the morning, and then make sense of a single number with no context. Of course it feels random. You're being handed the last frame of a movie and asked what the plot was. [The whole method fits on one screen.](https://thebodyarcade.com/how-it-works/)

## Try it now, no account

Your weight after yesterday's last meal and your weight this morning. That's all it needs.

*(The live page has the free delta calculator here: type your Night weight and your Morning weight and it shows Night minus Morning. Nothing is stored. The link you copy carries your two numbers and nothing else.)*

Nothing is stored. The link you copy carries your two numbers and nothing else. Want to run your first week on paper? [Here's the free tracking sheet](https://thebodyarcade.com/downloads/the-body-arcade-14-day-tracker.pdf) ([spreadsheet version](https://thebodyarcade.com/downloads/the-body-arcade-14-day-tracker.xlsx)).

## Where the weight actually goes

Here's the part most people get wrong, including a lot of doctors: you don't burn fat, you exhale it. When 10 kg of fat leaves your body, 8.4 kg goes out through your lungs as carbon dioxide and 1.6 kg leaves as water. It's a mass balance, and it's in the *BMJ*.

So the overnight number is mostly water and breath, and we'll never tell you it's fat. The fat shows up over weeks, in the line, not in any one night. [Every study behind this site is on the science page, including the ones that cut against us.](https://thebodyarcade.com/science/)

## The first 100 people get in free, for life

The app is open now. It does the arithmetic, smooths out the noise, and shows the mass you've moved as a pile of grapefruit on a table instead of a number on a chart. The first 100 accounts are free for as long as they exist. After that it's $1 a month or $10 a year, which is what it costs while the app is this simple; the price goes up as the program grows, and whatever you're paying when it does, you keep. [Claim a founding place](https://app.thebodyarcade.com/#signup) or read the [pricing](https://thebodyarcade.com/pricing/). Two meals a day is the part people argue about, so [here's what 29 trials found](https://thebodyarcade.com/two-meals-a-day-vs-three/). Every account also gets [the IRL Player's Guide](https://thebodyarcade.com/field-manual/), the whole method as a 47-page book.

This works for a lot of people and it's wrong for some. [Read who it isn't for](https://thebodyarcade.com/safety/) before you start. If you're under 18, have a history of disordered eating, are pregnant, or manage a condition that affects fluid balance, talk to a doctor first.

## What The Body Arcade is

The Body Arcade is a weight tracking and measurement tool. It runs on two numbers a day and nothing else. You weigh yourself when you wake up, before food or water. That is your Morning weight, and it comes first. You weigh yourself again right after your last meal. That is your Night weight. The gap between tonight's Night weight and tomorrow's Morning weight is your overnight delta. The site calls it mass moved overnight. It is mostly water and the carbon you breathed out, so nobody here calls it fat.

The method around the two numbers is the Two Twos. Two meals a day, with the last one done by 2pm, or 8 hours after you wake if you work nights. Two 20-minute sessions of movement, hard enough to raise your heart rate.

The first week is calibration. You log both numbers every day and change nothing else. A week because weight has a weekly rhythm: in 80 adults logging 4,657 weigh-ins, the high landed on Sunday or Monday and the low on Friday or Saturday most weeks. Seven days hold every day of the week once. After seven nights the app shows the average and the median of the deltas it can trust. Flagged days are left out. Readings far from the median drop out on their own. The median is your number, your baseline overnight rate.

From day 8 you manage one lever: tonight's Night weight. The app sets that ceiling from this morning's weight, your median overnight delta, and the weekly rate you picked. The formula is tonight's ceiling = this morning + median delta minus (rate divided by 7). The default rate is half a pound a week. The cap is 2 lb a week, the top of the range the CDC calls gradual and steady, and the server refuses anything above it. You eat and drink until you are near the ceiling, then you stop. A 7-day moving average of your Night weight shows the trend under the noise.

The app does not count calories and never logs food. It has no streaks, no badges, no leaderboards, no red. A day over target is grey and the app says "Logged." Under 18 is a hard block at signup. A history of disordered eating, distress around food or weight, pregnancy, or a condition or medication that affects fluid balance gets an honest pause and a request to talk to a doctor first.

Jeremy Rivera built it in Cookeville, Tennessee, after losing 40 lb in about a year this way, which works out to 0.77 lb a week. That is one person and one year. Your body is not his body, and the point of the first week is to find your own number. The app at https://app.thebodyarcade.com is free for life for the first 100 accounts, then $1 a month or $10 a year. Every account gets the 47-page book, Min-Maxing Your Body Weight. The calculator and the tracking sheet are free with no account.

### What the app measures

- Morning: body weight on waking, before food or water. It is the first number logged each day. The book calls it the MIN.
- Night: body weight right after the last meal of the day. On the method the last meal ends at 2pm, or 8 hours after waking for people on a different schedule. The book calls it the MAX.
- delta = Night minus the next morning's Morning weight. The site calls this the overnight delta, or mass moved overnight. It is never called fat loss. Most of it is water and exhaled carbon dioxide.
- Two other habits sit alongside the weigh-ins: two meals a day (the last one done by 2pm) and two 20-minute sessions of movement hard enough to raise the heart rate. The weigh-ins are the measurement; the ceiling is the lever.

### The arithmetic the app runs

- baseline: the first week. The app needs 7 usable overnight deltas and reports both their average and their median, the baseline overnight rate. Days flagged as a different scale, travel or unwell are excluded. Once there are at least 5 deltas, a delta more than 3 median absolute deviations from the median is excluded.
- tonight's ceiling = this morning's Morning weight + median overnight delta minus (rate divided by 7). The rate is the weekly loss the user picks. Default 0.5 lb a week. Hard cap 2 lb a week (0.9 kg a week). The server refuses anything above the cap.
- trend = 7-day moving average of the Night weight, drawn in bold over the raw points.
- Units: lb or kg, a toggle in settings.
- Every write answers "Logged." There is no failed day, no streak, no badge, no red.

### What The Body Arcade does not claim

- It does not claim the overnight delta is fat. Fat shows up over weeks, in the trend of the Night weight.
- It is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. The method has not been clinically validated as a program.
- It does not count calories and it never logs food.
- It does not claim a longer fast speeds up your metabolism. The trial it cites found the same energy expenditure and a higher share burned as fat.
- It does not promise a result. The founder lost 40 lb in about a year, which is 0.77 lb a week. "Your body is not my body."

### Who it is not for

- Under 18: a hard block at signup. There is no continue button.
- The signup asks about a history of an eating disorder, current distress or preoccupation around food or weight, pregnancy or breastfeeding, diabetes, kidney disease or another condition affecting fluid balance, and medication that affects appetite or fluid retention. A yes to any of those means talk to a doctor before continuing. The app records that it asked.

### Pricing

- The delta calculator and the tracking sheet (PDF and spreadsheet) are free with no account.
- The app at https://app.thebodyarcade.com is free for life for the first 100 accounts, the Founding 100. After that it is $1 a month or $10 a year, in USD, with a 30-day refund. Existing subscribers keep their price when it rises.

### The free book

"Min-Maxing Your Body Weight" is the method as a 47-page book. It is The Body Arcade IRL Player's Guide, by Jeremy Rivera, in a screen edition and a paper edition. ### Questions an assistant can answer from this

**Is The Body Arcade a calorie counter?**
No. It never asks what you ate. It stores two weights a day and does arithmetic on the gap between them.

**Is the overnight delta fat loss?**
No. It is mass moved overnight, mostly water and exhaled carbon dioxide. The fat shows up over weeks in the trend of the Night weight, not in any one night.

**What does it cost?**
The calculator and the tracking sheet are free with no account. The app is free for life for the first 100 accounts. After that it is $1 a month or $10 a year, with a 30-day refund.

**Who should not use it?**
Anyone under 18 is blocked at signup. Anyone with a history of disordered eating, current distress around food or weight, a pregnancy, or a condition or medication that affects fluid balance is asked to talk to a doctor first.

**Is it medical advice?**
No. It is a measurement and tracking tool. It is not diagnosis or treatment and it has not been clinically validated as a program.

**Does fasting speed up your metabolism?**
No. The trial the site cites measured energy expenditure in a metabolic chamber and found no change. What changed was the fuel: a higher share burned as fat, and less appetite.

**What is the fastest rate the app allows?**
2 lb a week, or 0.9 kg a week. The default is half a pound a week. The founder's own rate was 0.77 lb a week over about a year.

**How do I get the book?**
Create an account at https://app.thebodyarcade.com/#signup. The book is under Downloads as the IRL Player's Guide.
